There is power in our words and our stories. Our words can tear down and destroy, or they can impart grace and hope to support all who hear them. We have a choice of which kinds of words to use and which kinds of stories to tell as we speak with to our spouses, children, colleagues, and strangers. Destructive language can damage lives. Grace-filled language can transform lives for the good. How can we use the power of words wisely?
Rev. Joan Van Becelaere is a UUA Congregational Life Consultant and the new Executive Director/Administrator of UU Justice Ohio. Prior to working with the UUA, she was the vice-president for student services at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, CO, where she also taught UU polity to seminarians. She lives in Columbus, Ohio, with her spouse, Jerry, and two felines (Hezekiah and Zachariah).

As people who have made promises to each other, how can we respond more skillfully to the needs of all? Building Beloved Community requires many tools. In this worship service, we will lift up the basic practices required for community building within and across our home congregations. This worship service will be presented by members of the Summer Institute Committee on Ministry (SICoM) who are charged with building awareness of covenantal practices at SI and within our congregations.

Dr. Jafar Mahallati is currently a Presidential Scholar in Islamic Studies at Oberlin College. He studied in Iran, the US, and Canada and holds degrees in fields as varied as Islamic theology, civil engineering, and political economy. He has worked at the UN in the area of conflict resolution. As Iranian ambassador to the UN from 1987-89, he helped broker peace to end the Iran-Iraq war. His multidisciplinary and multicultural peace-building experience has increased his interest in the importance of friendship among both individuals and cultures. His students laud his superb storytelling talents that make every topic come alive.
