Blessings of the Harvest

Sunday, August 6, 2023 at 10 AM in Hobbs Hall

A multi-platform service led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Worship Associate Heidi Sumser.

As a community of all ages we will celebrate Lamas, an ancient Pagan holy day that marks the first harvests.  With songs and rituals and stories, we will honor our sixth source of spiritual wisdom, earth-centered traditions which teach us to live in harmony with nature, we will give thanks for the earth’s abundance, share freshly baked bread, and reflect on the spiritual gifts of this season.

Take a Chance

Sunday, July 23, 2023 at 10 AM in Hobbs Hall.

Led by Rev. Christie Anderson and Worship Associate CLM Kathy Kerns.

Research reveals that impromptu interactions with strangers are necessary for our our well-being. Further, meaningful conversations with strangers can embody our first UU Principle by drawing out the best in ourselves and others, including those who appear to be the hardest to approach. With inspiration from true stories, will you stretch your comfort level and take a chance to let your light shine?

What We Learned While Alone: Global Voices Speak to the Pandemic

Join us for a unique theatrical event that combines spoken word, music, movement, and digital dialogue to create an innovative interactive experience.

Date:  Sunday, July 23, 2023

Time:  12:30 PM

Location: Hobbs Hall at the UU Church of Kent (fellowship hall located behind the church building)

Parking:  “On Us” Portage Hike and Bike public parking lot located on Gougler Ave. just north of the church. There is a connecting sidewalk to church property located at the back end of the parking lot.

Cost: Free — this is made possible by the support of the Ohio Arts Council.

In March 2021, the Wick Poetry Center at Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, and the University of Arizona Poetry Center, Tucson, Arizona, launched the interactive website for the Global Vaccine Poem project, inviting anyone to share experiences of the pandemic and vaccination through their own poetic reflection. Thousands of everyday people responded from India to Ireland, from Maine to Hawai’i. In the spring of 2022, an anthology of these poems, Dear Vaccine: Global Voices Speak to the Pandemic, was published by The Kent State University Press.

“What We Learned While Alone: Global Voices Speak to the Pandemic” is based on the anthology “Dear Vaccine: Global Voices Speak to the Pandemic.”  It has been adapted for the stage by David Hassler, Director of the KSU Wick Poetry Center.

For those not able to attend the performance in person, we hope you’ll join us via Zoom:  https://zoom.us/j/95068596085

Music and Emotion

Sunday, July 16, 2023 at 10 AM in Hobbs Hall.

A multi-platform service led by Julie Swango and Worship Associate Heidi Sumser.

We encounter music throughout our daily lives: while watching movies, playing video games, shopping at grocery stores, visiting offices, attending special events, and while attending church! Join us to consider the link between music and emotion. This service will focus on reviewing qualities of music that drive our emotional response. Come ready to explore music both familiar and maybe not so familiar.
