A poet named Natasha wrote: “Build a plane, Build a dragon, Build whatever you can imagine with…” As we gather for our monthly Community Sunday to build and deepen connections with each other, our time together will invite us to be creative. Along with lots of Legos, there will be jigsaw puzzles and other activities after a brief opening service. Our Community Sunday will start at 11 am in Hobbs Hall.

The Sufi poet Hafiz wrote “Forget not, my heart, your ancient friends”, an invitation to remember those who loved us and whom we love that are no longer with us. In this solemn Vespers service, we will once again remember and honor our beloved dead with rituals and songs, love and tears, engraving their memories yet again in our hearts. This vespers service will be at 7 PM in the Sanctuary and live streamed on Zoom.
A multi-platform service led by Rev. Steven Protzman with Worship Associate Heidi Emhoff Wood.
Around the world, many cultures have festivals to remember the dead this time of year. Some of these festivals such as Samhain are linked to the change of seasons and the harvest, while others are spiritual in nature, including All Saints Day and the Day of the Dead. With stories and songs and the help of a colorful Hallowe’en character, we will explore some of these festivals and reflect on the eternal cycle of life and death. Everyone is welcome to wear Halloween costumes for this service.

This is a service for all ages! The UU Church of Kent invites you to spend a day at Hogwarts. After a long pause due to “You-Know-What”, KentHogwarts is back and needs your help to rekindle the magic! Adults can finally find out what happens behind those castle doors. The train leaves Platform 9 ¾ precisely at 11:00am, Sunday, October 23. Wands and robes are optional but very welcome! Wear your own or visit Madam Mendum’s Closet on your way in. For those attending remotely, please have a piece of paper in the shape of a square at the ready for your Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson. And lastly, mind the staircases as they have a habit of changing when you least expect it…

In Ripley, Ohio, a person’s journey of freedom from slavery began after crossing Ohio River and climbing the 100 steps to Rev. John Rankin’s house. We will learn about Ohio’s leading role in the Underground Railroad from the 1830’s to the Civil War, hear some of the stories of freedom and courage by people who sought to escape slavery as well as those who assisted them, and reflect on the unfinished work of creating freedom for all people.

National Coming Out Day is observed on October 11th of each year. It is a day of awareness of the LGBTQIA+ community and a recognition that coming out and living openly as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or non-binary is an act of courage. To honor National Coming Out Day, our service will be one of telling stories of coming out and reflecting on how our congregation can continue its work to be welcoming and inclusive.
