With a special spring character to lead us on an adventure of discovery, we will learn about Easter, a story of life overcoming death; Passover, the story of a people who arose and journeyed to freedom; and other celebrations of this joyful time of the year.

Hymn #298, Wake Now My Senses, set to the old Irish folk tune “Slane,” is a hymn that captures the essence of Unitarian Universalism. Some of the Seven Principles are even woven throughout the lyrics. Through singing and a series of readings and reflections we will explore how this hymn invites us to awaken and hear our call to work for justice, practice compassion, and discover our connections with all of life. During this service we will also commission Kathy Kerns as a Commissioned Lay Minister.

The Buddha was asked by someone who noticed there was something about him: “What are you?” he replied “I am awake”. What did the Buddha mean? What does it mean to be awake? As the world continues to awaken around us and we continue to emerge from the long winter of COVID, we will reflect on April’s Soul Matters theme of Awakening by examining what Buddhism teaches us about being spiritually awake.

The story behind the creation of the beloved UU hymn “Spirit of Life” is the story of Carolyn McDade’s renewal of faith and how she was inspired to write this song prayer for transformation. Using the hymn Spirit of Life, we will reflect on March’s theme of “Renewing Faith” and this beloved hymn’s powerful invitation to the Spirit of Life to renew us and to help us live out our Unitarian Universalist faith more fully.

The cold, the snow, and the ice have held us in their grip for months.  After a long winter, including a spiritual winter due to the pandemic, we need a little springtime- sunny days, flowers breaking through the soil, trees and grass turning green.  This service will welcome the return of spring with stories, songs, and rituals that invite us to join in the renewal of life and open our hearts to joy once again.

It has been spectacularly secularized from its origins and has grossly stereotyped Irish culture. A leap of faith means having trust in a vision of the future without knowing all the details.  As we begin our annual pledge drive, we will invite each other to reflect on times in our own lives when we have taken a leap of faith and to reflect on how our congregation is taking an enormous leap of faith with our new social hall and our vision of expanded ministry to one another and to the Kent community.

The proposed Eighth Principle calls us to “journey toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and in our institutions”. This service will be an opportunity to learn about the Eighth Principle. Why is this proposal so important? Why have other UU congregations endorsed it? How can we can join in the movement to create a Unitarian Universalism that is truly multi-cultural and inclusive?

Valentine’s Day, we will explore the many different meanings of love (the Greeks had five different words for it!), examine how love is the center of our Universalist heritage, and wonder at the power of love to hold us, heal us, and help us bring justice to the world.
