Oh Day of Joy and Gladness

Sunday, April 17, 2022 at 10 AM

A multi-platform service led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Worship Associate Kathy Kerns.

Spring is a season of rejoicing as life triumphs once again. It is also a time of many religious holidays that invite us to reflect on life’s power to renew itself. With a special spring character to lead us on an adventure of discovery, we will learn about Easter, a story of life overcoming death; Passover, the story of a people who arose and journeyed to freedom; and other celebrations of this joyful time of the year.

Wake, Now, My Senses

Sunday, April 10, 2022 at 10 AM.

A multi-platform service led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Worship Associate Kathy Kerns.

Hymn #298, Wake Now My Senses, set to the old Irish folk tune “Slane,” is a hymn that captures the essence of Unitarian Universalism. Some of the Seven Principles are even woven throughout the lyrics. Through singing and a series of readings and reflections we will explore how this hymn invites us to awaken and hear our call to work for justice, practice compassion, and discover our connections with all of life. During this service we will also commission Kathy Kerns as a Commissioned Lay Minister.

Buddha: “I Am Awake!”

Sunday, April 3, 2022 at 10 AM

A multi-platform service led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Worship Associate Lori Mirkin-McGee.

The Buddha was asked by someone who noticed there was something about him: “What are you?” he replied “I am awake”. What did the Buddha mean? What does it mean to be awake? As the world continues to awaken around us and we continue to emerge from the long winter of COVID, we will reflect on April’s Soul Matters theme of Awakening by examining what Buddhism teaches us about being spiritually awake.

Spirit of Life

Sunday, March 27, 2022 at 10 AM

A multi-platform service led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Worship Associate Lori Mirkin-McGee.

The story behind the creation of the beloved UU hymn “Spirit of Life” is the story of Carolyn McDade’s renewal of faith and how she was inspired to write this song prayer for transformation. Using the hymn Spirit of Life, we will reflect on March’s theme of “Renewing Faith” and this beloved hymn’s powerful invitation to the Spirit of Life to renew us and to help us live out our Unitarian Universalist faith more fully.

We Need a Little Springtime

Sunday, March 20, 2022 at 10 AM

A multi-platform service led by Rev. Steven Protzman.

The cold, the snow, and the ice have held us in their grip for months.  After a long winter, including a spiritual winter due to the pandemic, we need a little springtime- sunny days, flowers breaking through the soil, trees and grass turning green.  This service will welcome the return of spring with stories, songs, and rituals that invite us to join in the renewal of life and open our hearts to joy once again.

Patrick, Pagans, and No Snakes

Sunday, March 13, 2022

A virtual service led by Elaine Bowen and Worship Associate Lori Mirkin-McGee.

St. Patrick’s Day is yet another misunderstood holy day / holiday with myths, legends and misinformation galore. It has been spectacularly secularized from its origins and has grossly stereotyped Irish culture. Let’s look through a UU lens at this holiday and how we may reframe our “celebration” with respect, dignity and no green beer.

Leap of Faith

Sunday, March 6, 2022 at 10 AM.

A virtual service led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Worship Associate Eric van Baars.

A leap of faith means having trust in a vision of the future without knowing all the details.  As we begin our annual pledge drive, we will invite each other to reflect on times in our own lives when we have taken a leap of faith and to reflect on how our congregation is taking an enormous leap of faith with our new social hall and our vision of expanded ministry to one another and to the Kent community.

Widening the Circle

Image created by Peg Green for the 8th Principle Project. Used with permission.

Sunday, February 27, 2022 at 10 AM.

Led by Rev. Steven Protzman with Worship Associate Heidi Emhoff Wood.

The proposed Eighth Principle calls us to “journey toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and in our institutions”. This service will be an opportunity to learn about the Eighth Principle. Why is this proposal so important? Why have other UU congregations endorsed it? How can we can join in the movement to create a Unitarian Universalism that is truly multi-cultural and inclusive?

Still Seeking a Way

Sunday, February 20, 2022 at 10 AM.

A virtual service led by Rev. Steven Protzman with Worship Associate Heidi Shaffer Bish.

In spite of our commitment to social justice, liberal religion has failed many times when it comes to living up to a vision of racial equality and inclusion. As we continue February’s theme of Widening the Circle, this service will be an opportunity to learn about some of the black trailblazers in our denominational history and to reflect on our hopes for a more racially aware and integrated future for Unitarian Universalism.

This Thing Called Love

Sunday, February 13, 2022 at 10 AM.

A virtual service led by Rev. Steven Protzman with Worship Associate Elaine Bowen.

William B. Rice says that “love is a mystery in which we live and breathe and have our being.” What is this thing called love? In honor of (or perhaps in spite of?) Valentine’s Day, we will explore the many different meanings of love (the Greeks had five different words for it!), examine how love is the center of our Universalist heritage, and wonder at the power of love to hold us, heal us, and help us bring justice to the world.

Making Meaning of the Pandemic

Sunday, February 6, 2022 at 10 AM.

A virtual service led by Rev. Christie Anderson and Worship Associate Randy Bish.

If asked to think about our feelings summing up life during a pandemic, many of us would probably respond with a negative word. Have you stopped to consider the possibility of positive outcomes emerging from your experience? As a result of our time of social isolation, have you had new experiences, gained knowledge, indulged in self-care, or developed new habits that you want to carry forward? Let us take time to reflect and share how we have made meaning of this unanticipated, life-altering time of our lives.

The Bridge to Spring

Sunday, January 30, 2022 at 10 AM.

A virtual service led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Worship Associate Heidi Emhoff Wood.

We are in the heart of the winter, having reached the half way point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. It is time, as one writer says, to “step onto the bridge that leads us from winter to spring.” To mark this moment as the earth begins to stir, we will celebrate some of the various holidays and holy days of this time of year, including Imbolc, St. Brigid, Candelmas and of course Groundhog Day.

The Intelligence of the Heart

Sunday, January 23, 2022 at 10 AM.

A virtual service led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Worship Associate Lori Mirkin-McGee.

Dawna Markova writes that to live a life with passion and with purpose requires entering an expansive and untamed country that has its own rhythm. It is in this place where we encounter the intelligence of the heart, a place of meaning-making, wisdom, and creativity. As we continue to explore January’s theme of “Living With Intention”, we will reflect on our first source of spiritual wisdom and the spiritual practice of listening to
the still, small voice within.

Fulfilling the Dream

Sunday, January 16, 2022 at 10 AM.

A virtual service led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Director of Religious Education Colleen Thoele.

The dream that the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had is unfinished, a dream of true equality and an end to the triple evils of war, poverty and racism. We will once again honor the memory of Dr. King, learn about the justice work our children and youth have chosen for this year, and set our intentions as a congregation and individuals for continuing the work of creating a world where there is justice and peace.
