Henri Nouwen says, “Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day.” As we enter a new year with COVID and other challenges still here, how can we find joy? What spiritual practices can help us choose joy? Come consider these questions in a service prepared by a team of Commissioned Lay Ministers and Candidates from the Central East Region, with a story read by Kevyn Breedon and some music from our church members

There is a legend about a village of people who weren’t really a community. That changes on a Christmas Eve when they are brought together by a magic quilt made by an old woman who lives outside the village. As we once again welcome Christmas and celebrate the gifts this season brings, we will share candlelight, sing the songs and tell the stories of this night and reflect on what it means to be a community. We will have one all ages multi-platform service at 7 pm.

This special Vespers service on Zoom at 7 pm will be a meditative service that will provide space for grief, for reflection and remembering, for taking the time to simply be and seek out healing stillness.

Join our middle school class as they lead a service dedicated to finding joy and embracing laughter. This time of year can get overwhelming fast. This service aims to remind us all to stop and enjoy the little things that bring joy to our hearts. If you find that watching kitten videos on YouTube is just as good a spiritual practice as any, this service might be for you!

Many Christmas traditions we enjoy in the United States would not exist without Unitarians. We’ll learn about how this holiday was celebrated (or not) in the early history of this country, how it became popular again in the mid 1800s after Unitarian Charles Dickens wrote “A Christmas Carol” and meet some of the Unitarians who composed the songs and started some of the many holiday traditions we still enjoy today.

The hymn “Light One Candle” tells us “Don’t let the light go out.” This hymn is about the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah, which begins this evening and recalls the story of a military victory and the miracle of a sacred lamp that burned for eight days even though there was only enough oil for one day. As we tell this story, we will promise to keep the light burning brightly, the light of hope, justice, and peace.

A virtual service hosted by the UUCK Welcoming Congregations Renewal Team.
November 20th of each year is the Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day to honor the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of violence. The UUCK Welcoming Congregation Renewal Team will offer a special Vespers service that includes readings, music, ritual and reflection as we remember and grieve the trans lives lost to violence and recommit ourselves to make the world a safer place for trans and non-binary people.

It has been revealed in the news and in a documentary titled “The Social Dilemma” that Facebook has a series of algorithms (sets of rules and process) designed to promote divisiveness and anti-social behavior. As a congregation, our covenant is based on algorithms that are meant to promote values of radical hospitality and inclusivity. How are we doing with our algorithms? What work do we need to do to truly live into our covenant and practice our values?
