The Power of Ritual

Sunday, January 9, 2022 at 10 AM.

A virtual service by CLM Candidate Kathy Kerns and Worship Associate Eric van Baars.

Religions around the world all have religious practices that have been sustained over centuries, often with very little change over time.  What gives these practices their power?  How might our participation in a religious community and these practices affect us?

The Best Intentions

Sunday, January 2, 2022 at 10 AM.

Led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Worship Associate Heidi Shaffer Bish.

What if instead of creating resolutions for this new year we set intentions instead?  What if we had clarity about our passions and our true purpose in life instead of setting goals to correct things we think are wrong or need fixing?  As we welcome 2022, this service will be a time of songs, readings, reflection and ritual to let go of the old year and welcome the new year with intention, passion, joy and purpose.

The Christmas Quilt

Christmas Eve, December 24, 2021 at 7 PM.

Led by Rev. Steven Protzman with DRE Colleen Thoele and Worship Associate Randy Bish.

There is a legend about a village of people who weren’t really a community.  That changes on a Christmas Eve when they are brought together by a magic quilt made by an old woman who lives outside the village.  As we once again welcome Christmas and celebrate the gifts this season brings, we will share candlelight, sing the songs and tell the stories of this night and reflect on what it means to be a community.  We will have one all ages multi-platform service at 7 pm.

Christmas: The Unitarian Holiday

Sunday, December 5, 2021 at 10 AM.

Led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Worship Associate Heidi Shaffer Bish.

Many Christmas traditions we enjoy in the United States would not exist without Unitarians. We’ll learn about how this holiday was celebrated (or not) in the early history of this country, how it became popular again in the mid 1800s after Unitarian Charles Dickens wrote “A Christmas Carol” and meet some of the Unitarians who composed the songs and started some of the many holiday traditions we still enjoy today.

Light One Candle

Sunday, November 28, 2021 at 10 AM.

A multi-platform service led by the Rev. Steven Protzman.

The hymn “Light One Candle” tells us “Don’t let the light go out.” This hymn is about the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah, which begins this evening and recalls the story of a military victory and the miracle of a sacred lamp that burned for eight days even though there was only enough oil for one day. As we tell this story, we will promise to keep the light burning brightly, the light of hope, justice, and peace.

A Picture of Gratitude

Sunday, November 21, 2021 at 10 AM.

Led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Director of Religious Education Colleen Thoele.

What would gratitude look like if you could capture it in a picture? What if it was a puzzle of many pieces, each of them something we’re grateful for? We’ve created a gratitude picture, made up of the many pieces of gratitude you’ve each shared. As we gather to celebrate Thanksgiving, we will tell stories, sing songs, and reflect with thanks and joy on the many blessings life gives us.

Remember

Sunday, November 7, 2021 at 10 AM.

Led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Worship Associate Kathy Kerns.

As a congregation and as individuals, we are beginning a new chapter. We have a brand new social hall to live into, we are coming back together in person gradually for worship and community life, and we are each figuring out what life looks like as the pandemic wanes. As we shape a vision for the future, what do we want to hold onto from our past? What have we forgotten about ourselves or our congregation that needs to be remembered?

The Social Dilemma

Sunday, October 24, 2021 at 10 AM

A virtual service led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Worship Associate Kathy Kerns.

It has been revealed in the news and in a documentary titled “The Social Dilemma” that Facebook has a series of algorithms (sets of rules and process) designed to promote divisiveness and anti-social behavior.  As a congregation, our covenant is based on algorithms that are meant to promote values of radical hospitality and inclusivity.  How are we doing with our algorithms?  What work do we need to do to truly live into our covenant and practice our values?
