The Heart of Compassion

Sunday, June 7, 2020

A virtual service led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Rev. William Humphrey with Worship Associate Jen Gibson

At the core of all religious, ethical and spiritual traditions is the principle of compassion, which calls us to work to end the suffering of others and to treat others as we wish to be treated.  This service, which brings together the congregations of All Souls UU Church, Bellville, Ohio, and UU Church of Kent, Ohio will invite us into a deeper understanding of compassion and to reflect on our Second Principle, which challenges us to practice, justice, equity and compassion in our relationships.

Our Unitarian Universalist First Principle refers to respecting the inherent worth and dignity of every person, yet we know that not all people receive the same degree of attention in their living or in their passing.  This service is about acknowledging and attending to others, including those who may be forgotten or overlooked.  In this Memorial Day service we will honor those who have died (including veterans), and reflect on how we can honor one another in our everyday lives.

Note to caregivers of young and/or sensitive children: as part of the service we will remember those who have died during military service, by suicide, or through working for social justice causes.  Families might want to consider whether to have children continue to attend the service after the time for all ages.

Norbert Capek in Czechoslovakia in 1923.  Together as a community of all ages we will offer one another beauty and hope as we renew our commitment to cherish each another and all of life.

Artist of the Spirit

A virtual service led by Rev Steven Protzman and Worship Associate Lori McGee

Ernest Hemingway said, “The world breaks everyone, and some become strong at the broken places.”  We’ve all faced suffering and loss and maybe we’ve even felt that we’ve reached a point of no return.  How do we respond?  Is it possible that these times invite us to be artists of the spirit, not only to persevere and to repair what has been broken, but to create beauty and hope for ourselves and others?

Rev. Sarah York says:  “Roll the stone away from in front of your hearts.”  She invites us to realize that parts of ourselves may be shut away, especially in this time of fear and anxiety.  As we celebrate Easter with its many meanings and its promise that life ultimately triumphs over death, let us be open to Easter’s invitation to open our hearts and live more fully.

What Really Matters

Sunday, April 5, 2020

A virtual service at 10 AM led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Worship Associate Heidi Emhoff Wood.

Bill Gates recently wrote a reflection on what the coronavirus is teaching us about life and the need to reprioritize.  In this time when we are so aware of life’s fragility and the truth that life is a precious gift, what really matters?  We’ll reflect together on what this time is teaching us about living and life’s invitation to consider making some radical changes in our priorities for a more just, more loving world.

In this difficult time where we are physically distanced from one another and we need to stay home to help lessen the spread of the coronavirus, how do we care for one another and stay connected?  What lessons can we learn from this time that help us provide a safe haven for each other?  Using a folk tale from Africa, we will reflect on the gifts of compassion, patience, and kindness that can help us through challenging times.

A Timeless Wisdom

Sunday, March 15, 2020 at 10 AM

A virtual service via Zoom Video Conferencing

Led by Rev. Steven Protzman.

It has been said that one of the indications of wisdom is that it remains true through time, translations and the test of each generation reinterpreting it for meaning and relevance.  The 23rd Psalm, an ancient Hebrew text, will be presented in a variety of versions, including sung settings, as we explore the timeless message of hope and comfort this ancient poetry offers and reflect on how it is meaningful for us in the 21st century.

Additional participants this week were Hal Walker, Colleen Norris, and Sandy Bowers, Blaine and Vanessa Vesely.

Sunday morning services are offered at 9:45 and 11:30 am with nursery care available during both services.
