Play Is Radical Resistance

Sunday, September 6, 2020

A virtual service led by Elizabeth Reilly, CLM Candidate and Worship Associate Kathy Kerns.

Who couldn’t benefit from some lightening of the spirit? The spiritual practice of play belongs to all of us, not just human children. What playful activity transports you, brings you joy, provides your spirit with respite and renewal?  Let’s celebrate playing for its radical power

to resist succumbing to the heaviness of our hurting world and time, while we explore why it is necessary to the well-being of body, mind and soul.

This Lost and Found Life

Sunday, August 16, 2020

A virtual service led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Worship Associate Camille Pavlicek-Fauser

John Pavlovitz writes:  “the real story is that there is a balance in this living; something born with each thing that dies, something found for each thing lost.”  In this in-between time with all its uncertainty, there are things we have each lost but also things we have found or discovered about our lives and ourselves.  Together we will reflect on our lost and found lives and share what we are learning about living with a pandemic.

We will also do our annual backpack blessing during this service.

The Politics of Identity

Sunday, August 9, 2020

A virtual service led by Rev. Steven Protzman and Heidi Emhoff Wood.

It has been said “All politics is identity politics”.  In this sermon and service, purchased by Joel Slater at our Service Auction, we will explore how identity politics has created more division in our country.  We’ll also examine how it informs Unitarian Universalism and calls us to work towards our vision to be an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, multicultural institution and our sixth principle, the goal of world community with  peace, liberty and justice for all.

Lammas, also known as Lughnasadh, is a Pagan celebration that marks the first harvest of fruits, grains and vegetables.  As we honor our sixth source of spiritual wisdom, earth-centered traditions which teach us celebrate the sacred circle of life and to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature, we will give thanks for the earth’s abundance and reflect on the importance of nurturing our spiritual lives to have strength for life’s journey.

From War to Peace

Hiroshima’s Children’s Peace Memorial Monument

Sunday, July 26, 2020

Led by Swanny Voneida and Worship Associate Camille Pavlicek-Fauser

My family and I left Hawaii when I was 8 1/2 years old, 3 weeks before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.  I met Ted Voneida, my husband during the Korean War.  Together, we protested the many unnecessary wars after that.  Our Japanese friends led us to understand the tole of war on their country as well.  Now Japan is our ally, showing peace is possible if we are wise.

L’Chaim & Shalom: To Life and Peace

Sunday, July 19, 2020

A virtual service led by Elaine Yehle Bowen and Worship Associate Lori McGee.

Exploring a religion you know little about is a bit like putting your toe in the water to test how comfortable it might be. I put my toe into the waters of Judaism last summer and liked what I felt. This is my story of exploration and understanding of Judaism through a curious UU’s lens.

COVID-19 has Changed Church from a Noun to a Verb

Sunday, July 5, 2020

A virtual service led by Nicole Penny and Worship Associate Lori McGee.

The COVID-19 pandemic has my family, a family who considers ourselves to be a “church” family, not going to church or participating in many church groups because we don’t have a physical building to go to. We haven’t turned our backs on church, but we have a hard time participating. Yet, we live our faith and find ways to create justice in our personal worlds. We still live our principles and find our peace. This service will discuss the hardships of living faith in the pandemic. It will discuss how a little creativity can still bring faith and peace into a Unitarian Universalist home.

Whose Shoes?

Sunday, June 28, 2020

A virtual service led by Rev. Christie Anderson and Worship Associate Kathy Kerns.

Thanks to my husband’s intrepid curiosity, we had the rare and extraordinary opportunity to spend time with a man who was walking across America pulling a cart with a sign strapped to it reading “Love Life.” This worship service will highlight the lesson learned about encountering strangers based on whose shoes we’re in.

Turning of the Wheel

Sunday, June 21, 2020

A virtual service led by Lori McGee and Worship Associate Christopher Dum

The summer solstice is the longest day of the year and marks the beginning of the summer season.  The wheel of the year is turning once again, bringing a new season of warmth, light, and sun.  We are also experiencing a turning of the wheel in our culture right now.  Life looks so different than it did even a few months ago.  There are so many unanswered questions: will COVID-19 be with us forever?  Will our jobs resume?  Will we ever find a solution to the systemic racism that dominates America?  Will our Black friends and family continue to suffer?  These are big questions, for which no one yet has answers.  This service will look at the turning of the seasons as a way of understanding and coping with all the changes in our lives.
