Ingathering Service: Invisible Threads – August 21, 2016

spider-silk-1287407_1280with Rev. Melissa Carvill Ziemer, Director of Religious Education Lily Rappaport and Religious Education Coordinator Colleen Thoele

As children and teachers return to school, rhythms shift for families and even, sometimes subtly, for those of us no longer connected to academic calendars.  This morning we come together, children and adults, to celebrate our community uniting again after the adventures of summer.  We will honor the invisible threads that keep us connected no matter where we go or what we do.  There are two things to remember when you come to church next Sunday:

  1. Please bring a little container of water or earth from your home with you to church next week for our ritual gathering of water and earth.
  2. During the service we will offer a Blessing of the Backpacks for children and youth.  Please remind your children or youth to bring their backpack with them to the services next Sunday.

We look forward to celebrating together!

Services are offered on Sunday mornings at 9:45 and 11:30.  Nursery care is available.

Lover or Fighter – Finding a Balance – August 14, 2016

lover or fighter seesawLed by Rev. Melissa Carvill Ziemer and members of the Committee on Ministry

In this world of constant news, we are all too familiar with instances of innocent people’s lives being profoundly altered by the intrusion of violence in some public place.  Closer to home, we could all tell stories of small scale disruption in a public place.  As a community that serves and welcomes the public, how do we balance our concern for hospitality and security?  As individuals, how do we balance our desire to love the world and our desire to fight against hate, cruelty and injustice?  The Committee on Ministry has spent the last year exploring questions such as these.  We invite you to come join us as we reflect together on some of what we have discovered.

Sunday Services are offered at 9:45 and 11:30 AM.  Nursery care is available for children Preschool age and younger.

Colleen Norris was the winner of the raffle at our last service auction which gives her the opportunity to choose a subject upon which I will preach.  Collen has asked me to reflect on finding joy in trying times.  Why is finding joy amidst the struggle important?  How can we move past the obstacles that get in the way of choosing joy?

Plain and Simple – June 19, 2016

flowers-1Led by  Rev. Melissa Carvill Ziemer and Worship Associate Lisa Thiel

Simplicity is not only a pleasant practice, it may well be an antidote to some of the soul sickness of our own time.  One of the simple rituals Unitarian Universalists keep is an annual Flower Ceremony.  With this ceremony we celebrate the beauty of unity in diversity.  Please bring a stem or two of any flower that appeals to you with you to the service this morning.

We will also have the joy of celebrating baby dedications during our services today.  Mike Hovancsek and Stefanie Workman look forward to the dedication ceremony for Katherine during first service and Melissa and Evin Carvill Ziemer look forward to the ceremony for Owen during the second service.

Services will be offered at 9:45 and 11:30 AM.  Childcare is available for all worship services.

Simple Idealism – June 12, 2016 at Plum Creek Park!

Church Picnic Plan to attendLed by Rev. Melissa Carvill Ziemer and Worship Associate Andrew Rome

In the mid 19th century, Unitarians and Universalists started and became involved in a number of intentional utopian communities.  Often these communities began simply because the founders wanted to find a way to enact their lofty ideals.  What can we learn from their efforts in our own attempts to build and sustain community?

We will have one service only today and it will begin at 9:45 at Plum Creek Park in Kent.  Please bring a lawn chair or a blanket to sit on, sun screen or insect repellent and plan to stay for the morning. The service will be followed by an old-fashioned picnic to celebrate our church’s 150th anniversary.  Please bring something to share in the  pot-luck picnic lunch.  We’ll enjoy home- made root beer and ice cream. Afterwards, we’ll have the opportunity to participate in games and activities of the 1800’s.  If you wish, you may dress in the clothing styles of the 1860’s.  If you’d like to help with this event, please contact Mary Leeson.

On May 27, 1866, 19 men and women officially founded the First Universalist Church of Kent and affixed their names to a constitution of their creation. Their creation has been shaped and molded by the ones who followed them and now by us, but the core of it remains and continues to be a blessing for so many people.  This morning we lift up our gratitude for the ones who came before as we celebrate our 150th anniversary.
