Poetry has long been a vehicle for marginalized people to express themselves. Throughout time and space, poets have used words and verse to bring to light injustice, oppression, and inequity. This service will explore poetry from the margins in an effort to create connection and community during these difficult times.

There is so much change happening right now that it may feel as if the whole world is in a storm. How do we find the way to move with and through the storm? Not running for cover, but finding who we must become to ride it out and emerge triumphant. When the storm settles, as it must, how do we help to keep the house from blowing away?

One hundred years ago, a case was brought before a Tennessee court regarding the teaching of evolutionary theory in a public school classroom. The sensational public response to the trial generated a head-on battle between science and religion that still roils our national culture. How has this American story continued to impact life in the United States? Is building a bridge between faith and reason even possible in the country we’ve inherited?

Even if we give generously, it may be less natural to receive generously. Since we crave having our gifts acknowledged, it is an act of generosity to receive each other’s gifts with grace.

It’s that time of year of patriotic holidays, Memorial Day and Flag Day have recently passed and the big one, the 4th of July, is just ahead of us. You can’t miss the red, white and blue everywhere and it can evoke feelings of being conflicted, disappointed, sad, angry and yet, maybe still hopeful? These days, being an American is no longer the badge of honor we once believed it was. The question now is how do we reclaim patriotic pride as Unitarian Universalist Americans?

In this month of Freedom and of Pride, let’s examine the boxes our culture places us in– and how we free ourselves and those around us from the assumptions that keep us all confined. How can we shed life-limiting beliefs about who we are and may become? How can we mobilize to defend the rights of ALL people in the face of repression and violence? How can we ensure that those who come after us may grow up free to be & express their most authentic selves?

Please bring a flower to share during our service.

Unitarian Universalists often name the experience of “transcending mystery and wonder” as a foundational element of a spiritual life. This service will reflect on two contemporary stories about the intermingling of the sacred and the secular, inviting us to consider how we welcome mystery and wonder, within and beyond sanctuaries on Sunday morning.
