Welcome to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent. If you are seeking a life-affirming religious community of love and justice, we may be the church for you.
Ours is a congregation of seekers. We gather together in religious community not because we all share common beliefs, rather because we share common commitment. In our church we celebrate diversity. We affirm that there are many paths leading to spiritual growth and a life lived whole. Here we are committed to growing and learning, serving and caring. Our commitment is not only to ourselves and to our children, but also to each other and to the world we share.
Worship is the center of our community life. Our Sunday services explore a worthy theme each week through music, silence, prayer, meditation and the art of the sermon. In worship we seek to remember that which matters to us most and to bring our own lives ever more closely in line with our values. We draw inspiration from a wide variety of wisdom sources to help us in our quest to live loving lives of meaning and purpose. And we endeavor to remember that we dwell in so much mystery and a world of wonder.
We regularly create opportunities to share worship with the children of our church as we believe in the power and promise of intergenerational religious community. Most Sundays, though, our children spend their time at church in religious education classes. Each class is taught by two teachers whose primary goal is to support each child to become their best selves. The curricula is carefully chosen for each class so that a child who completes our religious education program will have a firm grounding in Unitarian Universalism, exposure to a wide variety of the world’s religions, opportunities to engage in ethical reflection, opportunities to care and to serve and a comprehensive sexuality education rooted in respect for self and others.
Throughout the week we offer a variety of programs and activities for enrichment, education and fellowship. We offer many opportunities for spiritual growth and discovery, religious exploration, musical expression, justice-making, caring, connecting, celebrating and serving.
We encourage you to join us for worship on Sunday mornings. Please check our Upcoming Services page for more detailed information. We would be very pleased to welcome you to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent.
There is no formal conversion process, so becoming a Unitarian Universalist is simply a matter of self-identification. Membership is voluntary and does not require renouncing other religious affiliations or practices.
Our faith tradition draws from many sources:
- Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces that create and uphold life.
- Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion and the transforming power of love.
- Wisdom from the world’s religions which inspires us to our ethical and spiritual life
- Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science and warn us against idolatries of mind and spirit.
- Spiritual teachings of Earth-centered religions, which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.
Many non-Unitarian Universalists are confused about what our denomination stands for. We have no creed or dogma, and each member is free to search out her or his own version of the Truth (with or without a capital “T”.)
Other good reference sources are available from our parent organization, the Unitarian Universalist Association. And, of course, our minister and members are always available to discuss our own individual perspectives on religion.
Remember that there is no “handbook” to learn. Each member is free to conduct her or his own quest for the meaning of religion, and what a member may believe today could change tomorrow with a new insight.
Come, join us in this exciting venture!
